FRIDAY, LEXINGTON KENTUCKY.COM JANUARY 23, 2009. Local BARNHILL Billy Thomas, 49, husband of Stephanie Ward Barnhill, died Tue, Jan 20, 2009 due to an automobile accident. He was the beloved son of Jack and Faye Barnhill of Lexington. Mr. Barnhill was a journeyman electrician for Electric.

In addition to his wife and parents, survivors include two adoring daughters, Sophia Golden Barnhill and Cecilia Marie Barnhill, both of Lexington; three brothers, Bobby Barnhill, Edmond, OK, Jackie Barnhill, Acworth, GA, and Scott Barnhill, Lexington; a sister, Melissa Ranallo, Hartshorne, OK; cousin, Mark Barnhill; aunt, Betty Barnhill; dear friend, Brian Walls, Lexington; and seven nieces and one nephew. Born in Liberty, KY, she was a daughter of the late Harrison and Bertha Lawson. She was a homemaker and a member of Broadway Christian Church. Survivors are a sister, Fay Grider; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Eve Fritz. She was preceded in death by a sister, Ida Lay, and three brothers, Herman, Hubert and Hershel Lawson. Burial will be in Blue Grass Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 12-2pm Sat. GLASS Gene McKenna, 81, husband of Billie Jean Glass, died Tue, Jan 20, 2009 at his residence. Born in Lexington, he was a son of the late E.M. and Margaret Glass.

He attended Millersburg Military Institute, a graduate of Henry Clay High School, and attended the University of Kentucky. He joined the Lexington Fire Dept. as a rookie in 1951, and retired in 1980 as acting chief after 30 years of service. He had been named Outstanding Fireman and an honorary life member of the Jaycees, and had received certificates honoring his contributions to the community from the Lexington and Fayette Lions Clubs, Jaycees, Lexington Recreation Dept. and the Lexington Fire Dept.

Mr. Glass Claus represented Santa in a joint Christmas project of the Fire Dept. and the Jaycees, visiting physically and mentally handicapped children in their homes and later in their classes at school. The program was expanded to include visits to church and civic club parties and other children's programs. He belonged to the Lexington Lions Club, Fraternal Order of Fireman, Kentucky Fireman's Association, Internal Association of Fire Chiefs, and as an instructor and co-chairman of the Kentucky Fire School.

Mr. Glass had been active in community fund raising campaigns, having served as chairman of the Fayette County March of Dimes; chairman of city employees for Community Chest; canister placement chairman for Easter Seal, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, arthritis, Bluegrass tuberculosis and heart fund drives; and captain of building campaigns for St. Joseph and Good Samaritan Hospitals and for the Y.M.C.A. He was an organizer of the 4-H Auto Safety Program; Junior Fire Chief fire prevention program; F.D. baby sitter training, and the local F.O.F.

An organizer for Boy Scout Troop L.F.D., he had been chairman of the Toys for Tots drive to collect and repair toys for underprivileged children. Mr. Glass had been civil defense coordinator for Lexington and Fayette County and director for community disaster planning. He had been an instructor for the Red Cross and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (emergency medical technician). He helped oversee that each medical transport had a trained paramedic on board.

With the okay of Dr. Dennis Kelly and Sister Michael Leo, Gene started the first Mended Hearts Program in Fayette Co. and served as its first president. He is a Democrat, he was on the board of the MMI for many years, and a member of Epworth Methodist Church. Smith, Lexington; a chosen daughter, Janice Mueller, Lexington; two grandchildren, Lisa Lynn (David) Almon and Lori (Joe) Banks; three great.

grandchildren, James McKenna Almon, Kayla and Keri Banks; a stepson, (Kelly) Turner, Lexington; a stepdaughter, Cheri (Larry) Willhoite, Coral Spring, FL; a sister, Carolyn (Junie) Ruppard; step grandsons, Forrest (Ashley) Turner and James Ryan Turner; step granddaughter, Seanna (Eric) PaulHus, Weston, FL; step great-grandchildren, Kaitlin Paul-Hus and Emma Rose Paul-Hus; a wonderful extended member of the family, Jo Kaverman; a special life long friend for over 60 years, F.W. (Buddy) Schneider. Services will be private by the Rev. Harold Dorsey. Burial will be in Lexington Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers will be Mario H. Avila, M.D., Martin Stone, M.D., C.W. Rankin, M.D., E.W. "Buddy" Schneider, Harold Delk, Don McKinney and Dr. Dale Goodin.
